This morning, my darling wife went out back to water the lawn. While she was clearing some branches, Mister Brown and I were watching her from the living room window. She stopped for a moment and I saw a dragonfly fly across the yard towards her. No sooner had I said, “Oooo, dragonfly!” than said dragonfly landed on her knee.
We were both struck dumb; we couldn’t believe it. But it just sat there. Long enough for me to grab my camera and head outside to take a couple of photos.
My wife took a great shot too (I’m just a little jealous, but even more proud) right after I took these. But you’ll have to wait for her to post that one.
Many of you may know that I’m a fiend for dragonflies. Been crazy about them for years. So this was just too neat for me, right after the best summer solstice I think I’ve ever had (more on that later, with a lot more photos).
For those who enjoy the slightly woo-woo-ness of animal meanings, here’s some info on Dragonfly, from Animal Speak by Ted Andrews:
The dragonfly and damselfly reflect and work with the sun and light….
Dragonflies remind us that we are light and can reflect the light in powerful ways if we choose to do so. “Let there be light” is the divine prompting to use the creative imaginaton as a force within your life….
Life is never quite the way it appears, but it is always filled with light and color. Dragonfly can help you to see through illusions and thus allow your own light to shine forth. Dragonfly brings the brightness of transformation and the wonder of colorful new vision.
Back in my college days, I also learned that many Native American cultures revered dragonflies as signs of good fortune. I don’t know how much of this kind of thing I believe literally. But I love mythology and the way cultures explain the world around them.
For me it’s enough good luck that dragonflies eat other insects. I think it’s a great omen that dragonflies have wandered into our yard, if only because we may have a less buggy summer.

Wow! I am so impressed with your bewildering visitation (especially blessing Eli!), and the amazing photos you were both able to take! So considerate of the wondrous visitor to stay long enough to pose for you! One year (maybe 10 years ago), I was visited by about 12-14 amazing dragonflies (or damsels) in about 4-5 different colors. As I walked out my door, they flew all around me, and alighted here & there on my body. I was transfixed and transformed by the wonder of it all, and have also been quite enamored of them ever since, even more than I was before. I have no idea what prompted it, but it was quite magical, and I must have needed their help for something. If anything, it certainly helps one’s view on life to have one’s breath taken away from time to time!
